10, 5 a 2.5-gigabitový Ethernet bude dostupný aj domácnostiam, prichádzajú lacnejšie prepínače

Lokálne Ethernetové siete s vyššou rýchlosťou ako gigabit za sekundu budú v blízkej budúcnosti cenovo dostupné aj menším firmám a individuálnym používateľom.

Po lacnejších Ethernet kartách podporujúcich 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps a prípadne 10 Gbps Ethernet totiž prichádzajú aj lacnejšie prepínače.

Platformu pre takého lacnejšie prepínače oznámili minulý týždeň spoločnosť Aquantia vyrábajúca Ethernet čipsety spolu so spoločnosťou Cameo Communications.

Postavená je na nových čipsetoch Aquantia AQrate AQR407, AQR408 a AQR409 podporujúcich štyri porty podľa verzie maximálne 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps alebo 10 Gbps Ethernetu. Platforma umožní lacnejšie 4, 5 a 8-portové prepínače.

Spoločnosti zatiaľ neoznámili očakávý termín dostupnosti takýchto prepínačov na trhu ani cenu, podľa náznaku pre Anandtech by sa cena mohla pohybovať na rádovo 30 dolárov na port a 8-portový 10 Gbps prepínač by mohol stáť medzi 250 až 300 dolárov.

Rýchlejšie Ethernet riešenia ako 1 Gbps boli donedávna nákladné a efektívne len pre veľké organizácie, pričom drahé boli prepínače aj klientské riešenia. S cieľom sprístupniť vyššie rýchlosti aj menším zákazníkom bol vytvorený a na jeseň minulého roka dokončený štandard NBASE-T pre 2.5 Gbps a 5 Gbps Ethernet. Ten využíva rovnakú fyzickú vrstvu ako 10 Gbps Ethernet ale pri nižšej signalizačnej rýchlosti a navyše funguje spoľahlivo aj po existujúcej Cat 5e a Cat 6 kabeláži.

Cenovo dostupné produkty prichádzajú najmä s čipsetmi od Aquantie, ktorých vyššie verzie navyše podporujú aj 10-gigabitový Ethernet. V máji spoločnosť predstavila aj svoje vlastné jednoportové PCI Express sieťovky AQtion AQN108 a AQN107, ktoré zvládajú v prvom prípade maximálne 5 Gbps a v druhom 10 Gbps Ethernet a ktoré podľa dostupných informácií majú stáť cca 100 a 125 dolárov.

Donedávna boli rýchlosti gigabitového Ethernetu s prenosovou rýchlosťou na úrovni cca 100 MB/s viac ako dostatočné, v súčasnosti pri bežne používaných výrazne rýchlejších SSD diskoch, NAS-och, rýchlejších štandardoch WiFi a vyššom počte pripojených zariadení môžu prestávať stačiť aj v menších firmách alebo dokonca domácnostiach a môžu sa začať stávať úzkym hrdlom sietí a systémov.
