In my job I fly about 300,000 miles per year. I do 2-3 international trips a month. I've lived in China for years, and after leaving still would go there at least once a month. I have about 25 pages in my passport filled to the brim with in/out stamps from Chinese passport control. My point is that I cross the border of China more than anyone else I know.
It is absolutely, 100% a fact that every time I enter China that at some point in the first few hours in the country and connecting to network or wifi, my phone will drain from 100% to 0% and be blazing hot for about an hour and I am sure it's because the government downloads your phone contents when you enter the country. I've come back to my hotel room to "cleaning staff" having boxes plugged into my laptop.
If you are in China, you are being spied upon and your content is exposed. Period.
