Google vysvetlil príčinu minulotýždňových rozsiahlych problémov

Spoločnosť Google aktuálne zverejnila analýzu minulotýždňových rozsiahlych a dlho trvajúcich problémov viacerých jej cloudových služieb aj s popisom hlavnej príčiny.

Problémy podľa aktuálnych informácií trvali 20. augusta od 5:55 do 12:30.

Dotkli sa okreme iného Gmail, Drive, Docs ale aj ďalších služieb a analýza uvádza konkrétne dopady celkovo na viac ako desiatku služieb.

Napríklad užívatelia Gmailu zaznamenávali problémy s dostupnosťou, chyby pri pridávaní príloh, oneskorené doručovanie správ a zrejme celkovú pomalosť.

Podľa spoločnosti problémy spôsobilo preťaženie jej internej služby pre ukladanie veľkých binárnych objektov, tzv. blobov, využívanej mnohými Google službami. Služba sa skladá z troch komponentov, rozhrania pre služby, strednej vrstvy pre operácie s metadátami a samotnej služby pre ukladanie dát.

Preťažená bola služba pre metadáta, ktorú najskôr preťažila iná Google služba nešpecifikovaná v analýze. Preťaženie viedlo k spomaleniu, opakovaniu operácií a následne vyčerpaniu zdrojov.

O 8:30 Google nasadil konfiguráciu, ktorá zabránila väčšine interných chýb služby pre ukladanie blobov, problémy ale pokračovali pre vyčerpanie zdrojov. Do 13:00 spoločnosti vyriešila incident pridaním ďalších zdrojov pre službu pre metadáta a ďalšími zmenami a k poslednej chybe pre vyčerpanie zdrojov prišlo o 13:03.

V analýze Google popisuje aj aké kroky uskutočňuje, aby zabránil rovnakému incidentu v budúcnosti.
