Communism as a political philosophy erred in that it ignored the influence, pervasiveness, and essential value of human greed.
Yet, stable and long-lasting communistic societies have existed within the larger society for (at least) millenia. I will point to the catholic nunneries and monasteries as specific examples; although there is a heirarchy within them they are communistic in their organization.
The essential characteristic of a successful communistic community is shared interests and goals, and a willingness to forgo serious competition and self-aggrandizement in achieving those goals. Hence, religious communes succeed (due to voluntary self-involvement) while political systems fail (due to involuntary self-involvement).
